Augusta is the third most populous city in Georgia and the anchor of the Central Savannah River Area, a bi-state Georgia and South Carolina metro of about 636,760 people that produced roughly $29.4 billion in real GDP in 2023. The economy is unusual for a city this size: its three largest employers are Augusta University, the Savannah River Site, and the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Gordon. Medicine, biotechnology, cybersecurity, and manufacturing are the metro core, and government and defense set much of the tempo.

Cybersecurity is the signature cluster. Fort Gordon, formerly Fort Eisenhower, is home to U.S. Army Cyber Command, the Cyber Center of Excellence, the Signal Corps, and the co-located NSA Georgia cryptologic center, with roughly 30,000 military and civilian workers and an estimated $1.1 billion local economic impact. The decision to move Army Cyber here drew more than 17,000 new personnel and families to the region, and the $100 million Georgia Cyber Center downtown, the largest single state investment in a cybersecurity facility in the country, has pulled defense and private cyber firms such as Parsons and Unisys into the Nathan Deal Campus alongside Augusta University and Augusta Technical College.

Healthcare and manufacturing round out the base. Augusta University and Wellstar MCG Health form the CSRA only academic medical center, paired with the Medical College of Georgia, and the university contributed about $1.62 billion to Georgia in fiscal 2024 on record enrollment. Down the river corridor, Textron Specialized Vehicles (E-Z-GO and Cushman, headquartered in Augusta), Club Car in Evans, and John Deere Commercial Products in Grovetown make the area a center of specialty-vehicle and turf-equipment production, while the Savannah River Site and Savannah River National Laboratory drive a large nuclear-operations and national-security R&D economy 25 miles down in South Carolina.

Augusta organizations deploying AI for cyber and IT operations, patient access, document processing, and manufacturing coordination are pulling ahead of peers still keying everything by hand. A workforce trained on federal-contracting rigor and security discipline, the Augusta University and Augusta Technical College talent base, and operating costs below Atlanta make the CSRA one of the higher-leverage Southeastern markets to put production AI to work, provided it ships with the audit trails and compliance posture this region expects.
