Federal Way is a diverse suburb of roughly 100,000 people in southwest King County, sitting on Interstate 5 about midway between Seattle and Tacoma and minutes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and two seaports. Its economy is service-, healthcare-, and retail-led rather than headquarters-heavy: the three largest job sectors are healthcare and social assistance (about 7,558 jobs), retail trade (about 6,305 jobs), and manufacturing (about 5,361 jobs). The city markets itself as a lower-cost "back office hub" for the South King County corridor.

A handful of large institutions anchor the local employer base. Federal Way Public Schools is the single largest employer at roughly 2,349 staff. World Vision, the international relief and development nonprofit, runs its US headquarters here with about 1,712 employees. St. Francis Hospital (part of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, a CommonSpirit and Virginia Mason combination) and the Virginia Mason Federal Way Medical Center anchor a healthcare cluster of nearly 1,400 jobs across hospital and clinics. The Washington Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists and the Korean Women's Association add a distinctive nonprofit and social-services layer.

These organizations run exactly the high-volume, repetitive workflows that AI automates well: patient access, scheduling, and clinical documentation across the St. Francis and VMFH clinics; donor, grant, and case-management operations at World Vision, the Korean Women's Association, and other nonprofits; enrollment, transportation, and records processing across Federal Way Public Schools; and customer service, scheduling, and inventory work across the retail base at The Commons, Costco, Walmart, Fred Meyer, and The Home Depot. Most of this is still handled by hand.

Adopting now matters because the rules are tightening and the talent pool is shifting. Washington's My Health My Data Act (in force since March 2024) carries a private right of action and reaches far beyond HIPAA-covered entities, while the December 2025 opening of the Federal Way Link light-rail station is reshaping the downtown around transit-oriented development. Federal Way firms that automate the routine work, with US data residency and a regulator-ready audit trail, free their people for the judgment work and pull ahead of peers still running everything manually. Weyerhaeuser, which built its campus here in 1971 and moved its headquarters to Seattle in 2016, is part of the city's heritage, not its current anchor.
