Honolulu is the economic engine of Hawaii. Honolulu County (the whole island of Oahu) holds about 69% of the state population, and the Urban Honolulu metro produced roughly $81.7 billion in GDP in 2023, by far the largest economy in the central Pacific. Tourism is the dominant industry: Hawaii drew about 9.69 million visitors and $20.68 billion in visitor spending in 2024, and Waikiki is the single largest visitor market, anchored by Hilton Hawaiian Village, Outrigger, the Royal Hawaiian, Hyatt, and Sheraton resorts plus Hawaiian Airlines and the Hawaii Convention Center.

The military and federal government are the second-largest force on Oahu. Defense spending was about $10.2 billion in 2023, roughly 9% of state GDP, supporting an estimated 17% of all Hawaii jobs through Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Schofield Barracks, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Tripler Army Medical Center, and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command at Camp Smith. As the state capital, Honolulu also concentrates state and county government, the University of Hawaii system, and the courts.

Banking, healthcare, and shipping round out the base. First Hawaiian Bank and Bank of Hawaii both run roughly $23 billion-asset operations from downtown Bishop Street, alongside Central Pacific Bank and American Savings Bank. The Queen’s Health Systems is the state’s largest private employer, with Hawaii Pacific Health, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, and HMSA close behind. Matson and Young Brothers move the just-in-time ocean and inter-island cargo the islands depend on, and Hawaiian Electric powers about 95% of the state.

Honolulu businesses face a distinct cost structure: high wages, a tight labor market, island logistics, and a five-to-six-hour time gap from the East Coast that makes after-hours coverage expensive to staff. Operators deploying AI for visitor service, patient access, claims and underwriting, document processing, and back-office workflow are reclaiming hours their teams cannot otherwise cover. The talent base feeding off the University of Hawaii and the East-West Center makes Honolulu a strong place to put production AI to work.
