Iowa is a diversified Midwest economy of roughly 3.24 million people that produced about $265.8 billion in nominal GDP in 2024. After the Bureau of Economic Analysis ran its annual update of 2024 growth data, Iowa's national growth ranking was revised from 49th up to 27th, and real GDP grew 3.7% in the second quarter of 2025, a top-20 result nationally, on the back of roughly $20 billion in new capital investment over about 18 months. Small businesses make up 99.3% of all Iowa employers and account for over 637,000 jobs, so the automation opportunity reaches far beyond the headline corporations.

Two clusters define the corporate economy. Des Moines is one of the most important insurance centres in the United States, long nicknamed the "Hartford of the West": Principal Financial Group, which manages about $712 billion in assets and employs roughly 9,000 people in the city, anchors a cluster that includes Nationwide, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, EMC Insurance, Athene USA, and Voya Financial, helped by one of the lowest insurance-premium taxes in the country. The Cedar Rapids corridor is the world's largest corn-processing city, home to Quaker Oats (the largest cereal mill on earth), Cargill, ADM, and Ingredion, alongside Collins Aerospace, whose global avionics headquarters is the city's largest employer with about 7,000 people.

Underneath that sits the food and fuel base the state is famous for. Iowa ranks first in the nation in corn, hog, and egg production and second in soybeans, with its pig farmers supplying roughly a third of the US hog inventory and a pork industry that added $15.4 billion in value in 2024. It is also the country's leading ethanol producer: 43 plants make more than 4.3 billion gallons a year, about 27% of US capacity, generating over $23.6 billion in output. Manufacturers like John Deere, whose Waterloo complex is its largest in the world with about 5,000 employees, and Pella-based Vermeer turn that farm economy into equipment.

Every one of these sectors burns staff hours on routine work that AI now handles: KYC, claims intake, and policy-servicing paperwork across the Des Moines insurance cluster, grade tracking and recall outreach in pork, eggs, and grain, production and compliance reporting across ethanol and biodiesel plants, ITAR-aware documentation in Cedar Rapids aerospace, and supplier and maintenance workflows in ag-equipment manufacturing. The arrival of Google, Meta, and Microsoft data-centre campuses, with more than $10 billion in planned investment, signals how quickly Iowa's digital infrastructure is scaling.
