Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska and the seat of Lancaster County, a metro of roughly 350,000 people with a real GDP near $28 billion in 2023. Its economy is weighted toward government and education in a way few cities its size are: the State of Nebraska, Lincoln Public Schools, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are the three largest employers, and state government plus the university together account for around a quarter of local activity. Healthcare is the single largest employment sector, anchored by Bryan Health and CHI Health St. Elizabeth, followed by education and retail.

On top of that public-sector base sits a genuine private economy. Lincoln is the headquarters of Hudl, a global sports-video and performance-analysis software company in the historic Haymarket District with about $730 million in 2024 revenue, and of Nelnet, the largest student-loan servicer in the United States, now a diversified education-payments, fiber, and asset-management company reporting roughly $1.3 billion in revenue. Insurance is a long-standing strength: Ameritas, a mutual insurer founded in 1887 with about $5 billion in annual revenue, and Assurity are both headquartered in the city. Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing and Continental ContiTech anchor a steady manufacturing base.

These sectors share a heavy administrative load. State agencies, the courts, and the school district run records, licensing, and constituent-service queues. UNL processes admissions, advising, grants, and research paperwork under FERPA. The insurers handle claims, underwriting, and policyholder correspondence under GLBA; Nelnet runs high-volume loan-servicing and education-payments workflows; and the hospitals manage scheduling, intake, and prior authorisation under HIPAA. Every one of these is a candidate for automation that clears backlog instead of adding headcount.

The regulatory backdrop also shifted. Nebraska became a comprehensive-privacy state when the Nebraska Data Privacy Act took effect on January 1, 2025, enforced by the state Attorney General and applying to essentially any non-small business that processes consumer data. Lincoln firms that build automation with privacy, sensitive-data consent, and audit logging designed in from the start are positioned for that environment, and the deep UNL talent pipeline makes the city one of the higher-leverage Midwest markets to put production AI to work.
