Lubbock is the Hub City of the South Plains, and its roughly $19.7 billion metro economy rests on four anchors. Texas Tech University crossed 42,272 students in fall 2025, a record, and is the city's largest employer at around 21,000 faculty and staff. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, with schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, health professions, and biomedical sciences, turns the campus into the academic-medicine center of West Texas.

Healthcare is the single largest employment cluster, close to 17% of all jobs. Covenant Health runs more than 5,000 employees and 600-plus physicians, and University Medical Center operates the 412-bed primary teaching hospital for TTUHSC plus the only Level 1 Trauma Center and Burn Center within roughly 400 miles. Both health systems carry the administrative load that comes with being the referral destination for a wide rural catchment.

Then there is cotton. The South Plains around Lubbock is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world, roughly 19 counties and more than 3 million planted acres in strong years, producing over a third of the entire US crop. Lubbock is its processing capital: PYCO Industries mills cottonseed oil for some 60 member gins, Bayer runs a $140 million cottonseed hub, and Plains Cotton Cooperative Association markets the fiber. ADM and PYCO announced a Lubbock cottonseed-processing joint venture in 2025.

Lubbock firms putting AI to work on patient access, FERPA-aligned student services, cotton and ag-processing logistics, claims and document handling, and wind-research data are pulling ahead of peers still keying everything by hand. The combination of a deep university talent pool, a regional healthcare base, and Central Time coverage makes Lubbock a high-leverage place to ship production automation under Texas privacy rules.
