Baie-Comeau is a heavy-industry town on the North Shore (Cote-Nord) of the St. Lawrence, built where abundant hydroelectric power meets a deep-water port. Its industrial cornerstone is the Alcoa Aluminerie de Baie-Comeau, a primary smelter operating since 1958 with capacity around 548,000 tonnes of aluminium per year, roughly 925 employees, and power that is about 99% hydroelectric. The smelter ties the city into Quebec's aluminium economy and the global market for low-carbon aluminium.

The reason the smelter and the grain terminal are here is power. Baie-Comeau is the gateway to Hydro-Quebec's Manic-Outardes complex: eight generating stations on the Manicouagan and Outardes rivers, including the Jean-Lesage station (Manic-2) about 20 km north and the Daniel-Johnson dam (Manic-5), the largest multiple-arch-and-buttress dam in the world at roughly 2,660 MW. The Manic corridor along Route 389 is both an operations spine and a marquee tourism route.

The deep-water Port of Baie-Comeau is ice-free year-round and runs five terminals on the Baie des Anglais. Cargill operates a grain elevator there of about 13 million bushels (roughly 440,000 tonnes), one of its largest transfer terminals in North America, moving Great Lakes grain to ocean carriers. The CISSS de la Cote-Nord, headquartered in the city at Hopital Le Royer with about 3,600 employees, makes healthcare the largest single employment sector, and the Cegep de Baie-Comeau with its UQAR branch supplies regional talent.
