Campbell River is the third-largest city on Vancouver Island and the economic hub of the Strathcona Regional District, the gateway and service centre for the North Island. Long branded the Salmon Capital of the World, it is also the Canadian head-office location for the west-coast farmed-salmon industry: Cermaq Canada (owned by Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation through the Oslo-based Cermaq Group) is headquartered here, Mowi Canada West runs the largest Atlantic-salmon operation on the Canadian west coast with 500-plus BC employees, and Grieg Seafood BC operates administrative offices in town. Aquaculture and its supplier base employ roughly 400 people directly in the city.

The wider economy runs on forestry, tourism, hydroelectric power, and healthcare. Four major forest licensees work the area: Western Forest Products, Interfor, TimberWest, and Island Timberlands. BC Hydro's John Hart Generating Station on the Campbell River, a 126 MW plant rebuilt for $1.093 billion and back in service in 2018, supplies about 17% of Vancouver Island's generating capacity. Island Health's 105-bed Campbell River and District Hospital is the North Island's regional referral facility, and tourism, sport fishing, and ecotourism remain one of the region's three largest sectors.

These industries carry heavy manual workloads that AI removes well. Aquaculture and processing operators handle fish-health and sea-lice reporting, CFIA traceability paperwork, and DFO licence-condition compliance. Forestry firms coordinate harvesting, log-handling, and scaling records. Hospitals and clinics field high call and intake volumes, tourism and lodge operators answer enquiries and bookings around the clock, and every employer competes for skilled staff in a tight North Island labour market. Automating the repetitive work lets lean teams cover far more ground.

Campbell River also has the infrastructure to support it. CRadvantage, Vancouver Island's first open-access municipal fibre network, went live in 2017, the city is part of the TechIsland coastal corridor, and North Island College runs DIGITAL Design and Development programs plus the CARTI Seaweed Innovation Hub. With the federal plan to phase out open-net-pen salmon farming by June 30, 2029 pushing the sector toward closed-containment and new operating models, operators that automate now build the data discipline the next decade will demand.
