Provo is the fourth-largest city in Utah and the seat of Utah County, the principal city of a Provo-Orem-Lehi metro that grew about 12.6 percent between 2020 and 2024 to roughly 760,500 residents, among the fastest growth of any large US metro. Brigham Young University anchors the city: 37,205 daytime students from 105 countries on a 738-acre campus make it the largest private religious university in the country and Provo's single largest employer. That university footprint sets the tone for the whole local economy.

Software and smart-home technology run almost as deep. Qualtrics, founded in Provo in 2002, created the experience management category and was valued at about $12.5 billion when Silver Lake and CPP Investments took it private in 2023. Vivint Smart Home, founded in Provo in 1999 and now part of NRG Energy, runs its smart-home and security operation from a Provo headquarters. Both are part of a Silicon Slopes corridor that employs more than 100,000 tech workers statewide.

Healthcare and consumer wellness fill out the base. Intermountain Utah Valley Hospital is a 395-bed referral center for Utah County and the only Level II Trauma Center between the Salt Lake Valley and St. George, running under HIPAA with 800-plus medical staff. Nu Skin Enterprises, headquartered on Center Street with roughly $1.7 billion in annual revenue, drives a direct-selling, e-commerce, and distributor network. Utah County is also a national hub for family-history and consumer-DNA data, with genetic-privacy concerns layered on top of standard rules.

Provo firms putting AI to work on student-services and admissions inquiries, SaaS support and onboarding, smart-home dispatch coordination, clinical intake and referral routing, and distributor and order operations are pulling ahead of peers still doing it all by hand. A young, internationally drawn talent base out of BYU and the Silicon Slopes ecosystem makes Provo one of the higher-leverage Mountain West markets for production AI.
