Jackson is the capital and largest city of Mississippi and the anchor of the state's largest metropolitan economy, which generated roughly $37B in GDP in 2023. As the seat of state government, Jackson runs on the public sector: the State of Mississippi is the metro's single largest employer, with close to 11,870 jobs across executive agencies, the legislature, and the courts, alongside the City of Jackson, Hinds County, and Jackson Public Schools.

Healthcare is the other pillar. The University of Mississippi Medical Center, the state's only academic medical center, employs more than 10,000 people, holds Mississippi's only Level I trauma center, and runs Children's of Mississippi, the state's only children's hospital. St. Dominic Hospital, Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, and Merit Health Central add several thousand more healthcare jobs. Every one of these organizations handles protected health information under HIPAA and runs scheduling, patient access, and documentation workflows that consume thousands of staff hours per week.

Private industry rounds out the base. C Spire, the nation's largest privately held wireless carrier, is headquartered in Ridgeland; Trustmark, a bank holding company with 163 branches, and Entergy Mississippi, the electric utility serving about 459,000 customers, are headquartered downtown; and Ergon, a $3.2B privately held energy and logistics group, is headquartered in Flowood. Manufacturing runs deep too, with the Nissan assembly plant in Canton (about 5,000 workers) and the Continental Tire plant in Clinton anchoring a Southeastern automotive corridor.

Jackson firms deploying AI for patient access and clinical documentation, public-sector constituent service, telecom and utility customer operations, claims and document processing, and back-office reconciliation are pulling ahead of peers still doing it by hand. With Amazon investing $25B in data-center campuses across Madison and Hinds counties, the metro is becoming an emerging digital-infrastructure hub, and the firms that build AI in now, with a clean audit trail, will be the ones ready for it.
