New Jersey runs one of the larger and most productive economies in the United States. Its nominal GDP was roughly $887 billion in 2025, and on an inflation-adjusted basis its real GDP per capita of about $72,100 ranks 11th of all fifty states. Home to about 9.5 million people, the Garden State is the most densely populated US state and led the Northeast in population growth in 2024 (up roughly 121,000 residents). Its economy leans hard into knowledge and infrastructure industries: pharmaceuticals, finance, logistics, advanced manufacturing, and a fast-growing technology base.

It is, above all, the pharmaceutical capital of America. New Jersey hosts 13 of the world's top 20 pharmaceutical companies, with Johnson & Johnson headquartered in New Brunswick, Merck in Rahway, Becton Dickinson in Franklin Lakes, and Bristol Myers Squibb anchoring the Princeton research corridor. In 2023 the life-sciences sector ran about 2,400 establishments employing roughly 86,000 people at an average salary near $182,100, more than double the state average, on the back of one of the highest concentrations of scientists and engineers in the country.

Every New Jersey sector burns staff hours on routine work that AI now handles: GxP document handling, trial-data intake, and quality records in pharma and medical devices; KYC, claims intake, and reconciliation across the Newark insurance base and the Jersey City banking cluster; bill-of-lading, customs, and proof-of-delivery paperwork across the port and the Edison logistics belt; and after-hours lead handling across professional services. The firms automating these workflows are pulling ahead of peers still routing everything by hand.

The state is also putting public money behind applied AI. The NJ AI Hub opened in Princeton (West Windsor) in March 2025 as an NJEDA, Princeton, Microsoft, and CoreWeave partnership, and in December 2025 the NJEDA and CoreWeave announced a $20M AI Hub Fund for startups, alongside CoreWeave's roughly $1.8B Kenilworth data-center build.
