Revelstoke is a city of 8,275 on the banks of the Columbia River, set between the Monashee and Selkirk mountains in the Columbia-Shuswap region of southeastern British Columbia, on the Trans-Canada Highway. Its population grew 9.4% between 2016 and 2021, and the functional town swells far higher in the winter ski and summer tourism seasons. Revelstoke was created by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s, named for the London banker who rescued the railway from bankruptcy, and rail, forestry, and natural resources are the industries that built and sustained it for more than a century. The line is now part of Canadian Pacific Kansas City, and the divisional yard keeps rail a living employer in town.

Three more pillars define the modern economy. Tourism and recreation centre on Revelstoke Mountain Resort, which opened in 2007 with North America's greatest lift-served vertical at 1,713 metres, roughly 3,120 acres of terrain, and about 10.5 metres of average annual snowfall, supported by heli and cat-skiing operators and two national parks. Hydroelectric power runs through BC Hydro's Revelstoke Generating Station 5 km north of town (2,480 MW) and the Mica Generating Station 135 km upstream (2,805 MW, the tallest dam in Canada). Forestry centres on Downie Timber and its sister company Selkirk Cedar, the town's largest private employer with roughly 285 to 300 staff and the last sawmill between Salmon Arm and Golden. Queen Victoria Hospital, School District No. 19, and Parks Canada round out the base.

These industries carry heavy, repetitive workloads that AI removes well. The railway and the hydro plants generate constant safety documentation, asset and maintenance records, environmental monitoring, and regulatory reporting. The resort, lodges, hotels, and adventure-tourism operators field a flood of seasonal enquiries and bookings around the clock, much of it after hours and across time zones. Downie Timber runs on production, grading, shipping, and logistics records. Queen Victoria Hospital handles high intake and scheduling volumes. Automating the routine work lets lean Revelstoke teams cover far more ground without adding headcount in a labour market squeezed by an acute housing shortage.

Revelstoke also faces real workforce pressure and the appetite to address it. A median single-family home forecast near $922,950 for 2026 is pricing essential and seasonal workers out of town, and the City, Community Futures Revelstoke, and the Revelstoke Community Housing Society are building price-restricted workforce housing in response. For employers who cannot simply hire their way out of a staffing gap, automation that absorbs routine work is one of the few levers that scales. Operators that build automation and data discipline now are better placed for whichever way the next tourism season and resource cycle turn.
