Wilmington is the corporate capital of America. As of 2024, roughly 66.7% of all Fortune 500 companies and 81.4% of US-based IPOs chose Delaware as their corporate home, and about 2.1 million legal entities are registered in the state. The Delaware Court of Chancery, the jury-free business court in downtown Wilmington whose judges are corporate-law experts, writes the case law that governs most large US companies. That draws a dense cluster of corporate-law firms (Richards, Layton & Finger; Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell; Potter Anderson & Corroon; Morris James), registered agents, and corporate-trust providers into the city. To be clear, this is Wilmington in Delaware, not the North Carolina city of the same name.

Banking and credit cards run just as deep. Delaware's 1981 Financial Center Development Act largely eliminated usury ceilings and invited out-of-state banks that employed at least 100 people, bringing roughly 35 credit-card banks and about 40,000 jobs. Wilmington now hosts JPMorgan Chase (its credit-card headquarters and the largest for-profit employer in Delaware), Bank of America, Barclays US, Capital One, Discover, and Citigroup operations, plus the headquarters of WSFS Bank and the M&T and Wilmington Trust franchise. Every one of those firms runs onboarding, KYC, card servicing, and trust operations under GLBA, PCI-DSS, and SOX.

The DuPont legacy still anchors the materials and life-science economy. DuPont de Nemours and Chemours are headquartered in Wilmington, Corteva Agriscience kept a major Wilmington presence and moved 200-plus corporate staff into a downtown office in early 2026, and Incyte runs its global biopharmaceutical headquarters at Alapocas with more than 1,000 employees. ChristianaCare, the largest private employer in Delaware with nearly 14,000 employees, anchors academic medicine alongside Nemours Children's Health. Delaware is also the third-largest US captive-insurance domicile.

Wilmington firms deploying AI for corporate-entity and Chancery-litigation document workflows, bank and credit-card KYC and dispute handling, GxP regulatory submissions, and patient-access automation are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The Delaware Personal Data Privacy Act took effect January 1, 2025 with one of the lowest applicability thresholds in the country, so building privacy and audit controls in from day one is now the cost of entry, and the firms that do it ship faster than those who bolt it on later.
