Fullerton runs on education. California State University, Fullerton enrolled a record 43,662 students in fall 2024, the largest enrollment in the 23-campus CSU system and the only public university in Orange County, while Fullerton College, the oldest community college in continuous operation in California, sends more students to the CSU than any other two-year school. Between them the two campuses move tens of thousands of admissions files, advising cases, financial-aid packets, and transcript requests every term, all of it FERPA-governed.

Healthcare is the city's single largest employment sector. St. Jude Medical Center, a 329-bed Providence acute-care hospital with roughly 1,797 staff and about 700 physicians, anchors a network of clinics, specialty practices, and senior-care operators such as Morningside of Fullerton. Every one of those organisations runs patient access, referral coordination, prior authorisation, and records workflows under HIPAA and California's Confidentiality of Medical Information Act.

Fullerton also carries a deep aerospace and defense manufacturing legacy. Raytheon (RTX) designs radar, missile-defense, and command-and-control systems at the former Hughes Aircraft Ground Systems site with around 1,200 employees, and Howmet Aerospace runs two Fullerton plants making aerospace fasteners. These are ITAR and export-controlled operations where documentation discipline and CMMC-grade security are the cost of doing business. Vons keeps its Southern California corporate office in the city, and the revitalised downtown SOCO district anchors a busy retail, food, and nightlife economy.

Fullerton organisations deploying AI for FERPA-aligned admissions and student services, HIPAA-aligned patient access, defense-manufacturing document control, and retail and back-office automation are pulling ahead of peers still doing the work by hand. The talent base, fed by CSUF and Fullerton College graduates across business, engineering, nursing, and computer science, makes Fullerton one of the higher-leverage mid-size California markets to put production AI to work.
