South Dakota is a Northern Plains state whose economy has tilted from a pure agricultural base toward finance, health care, and increasingly data-center infrastructure. Real gross state product reached $58.5 billion in 2025, 1.4% higher than the year before and the highest to date, with per-capita output around $62,600. Growth is concentrated in two metros: Sioux Falls in the southeast, the financial and health-care centre, and Rapid City in the Black Hills to the west. Finance and insurance is now the state's single largest sector, contributing $8.04 billion to 2025 GDP, ahead of education-and-health care ($6.71 billion) and government ($6.36 billion). It is a direct legacy of South Dakota's 1980s elimination of interest-rate caps, which drew the national credit-card and, later, the personal-trust industry to Sioux Falls. Citi, Wells Fargo, First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard, and Pathward all run major operations there, and the state is now the leading US personal-trust jurisdiction: the Division of Banking reported 115 chartered trust companies holding about $815 billion in assets at the end of 2024, rising to roughly $906 billion in 2025.

The state is also building the talent and the infrastructure to support it. The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City offers an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning specialization in its computer-science program, the University of South Dakota and its Sanford School of Medicine lead a roughly $6.5 million Biomedical Computation Collaboration with SD Mines, and Sioux Falls anchors precision-agriculture and autonomy work through Raven Industries and CNH. A hyperscale data-center wave is underway: Gemini Data Center SD is seeking approvals for a roughly $1.9 billion, 500-megawatt facility northeast of Sioux Falls targeted to operate by 2028, and Applied Digital has proposed a separate multibillion-dollar project.
