Greenville anchors Upstate South Carolina, a metro of roughly one million along the I-85 advanced-manufacturing corridor with a gross domestic product near $63 billion. Michelin North America runs its entire North American operation from downtown Greenville (about 7,000 local employees), GE Vernova builds turbines at its largest gas-power plant here (about 3,600 employees across 1.7 million square feet), and Lockheed Martin assembles the F-16 at the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center. The nearby BMW plant in Greer, the largest US vehicle exporter, pulls a dense supplier cluster that includes Bosch and Sage Automotive Interiors.

These industries run on documents, traceability, and uptime. Tire and turbine plants juggle production scheduling, supplier onboarding, PPAP and quality packets, and maintenance planning under IATF 16949; aerospace work at SCTAC carries an ITAR and AS9100 regime; Prisma Health and Bon Secours handle patient access and revenue-cycle volume under HIPAA. Much of that work still moves by spreadsheet, email, and manual rekeying, which is exactly where AI automation pays back the fastest.

Greenville also has the talent to deploy it. Clemson University runs the nation's first automotive-engineering program at CU-ICAR in the city, with 20-plus corporate partners on campus, and Greenville Technical College feeds mechatronics and advanced-manufacturing skills into the local workforce. Lower operating costs than the coastal hubs and the golden-quadrant position at I-85, I-385, I-26, and I-185 make Greenville a high-leverage place to put production AI to work.

Manufacturers, healthcare systems, and suppliers that automate supplier coordination, quality documentation, maintenance scheduling, patient access, and back-office workflow are pulling ahead of Upstate peers still doing it by hand. With more than $8 billion in new manufacturing investment announced in the Upstate in 2024 alone, the cost of staying manual is rising every quarter.
