North Carolina is one of the largest and fastest-growing economies in the United States. Its nominal GDP reached roughly $844.2 billion in 2024 per U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis state data, a top-ten state economy, on a population that crossed 11 million in 2024 with growth of about 165,000 people in a single year, among the fastest net-migration rates in the country. CNBC named North Carolina America's Top State for Business in 2025, after also topping the ranking in 2022. The state is not one economy but several: a banking centre in Charlotte, a global life-sciences cluster in the Research Triangle, an EV-manufacturing surge in the centre of the state, and a deep agricultural and military base.

Charlotte is the second-largest banking centre in the US after New York. Bank of America, Truist, and Honeywell are headquartered in Uptown, Nucor (the largest US steelmaker) and Duke Energy anchor the corporate base, and Lowe's runs from nearby Mooresville. Ninety miles east, the Research Triangle ties together Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill: Research Triangle Park spans roughly 7,000 acres with more than 300 companies and over 50,000 employees, and the state's life-sciences industry delivers over $80 billion in annual economic impact through firms like Biogen, GSK, Novo Nordisk, Labcorp, and IQVIA.

Every one of these sectors burns thousands of staff hours on routine work that AI now handles: KYC, reconciliation, and dispute handling across the Charlotte banking cluster; clinical-trial documentation, regulatory submissions, and lab intake across the Triangle life-sciences base; supplier and quality workflows at the Toyota battery plant and the wider battery belt; grade tracking and recall outreach across the state's agriculture; and patient access across Duke Health and UNC Health. The firms automating these workflows are pulling ahead of peers still routing everything by hand.

North Carolina is also building the talent to support it. Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State each run major AI research programs, UNC's School of Data Science and Society, NC State's NSF EngageAI Institute and NSA-partnered Laboratory for Analytic Sciences, and Duke's AI product-innovation programs, alongside SAS Institute and Epic Games in Cary and a deep RTP startup base. One thing sets North Carolina apart from California or Virginia: there is no comprehensive state consumer-privacy law. Bills to create one were introduced in the 2025–2026 session, including House Bill 462, but none became law, so compliance runs through the federal sectoral regimes that genuinely apply: HIPAA for health and life-sciences data and GLBA for the banking sector, plus North Carolina's Identity Theft Protection Act and its breach-notification duties to the Attorney General.
