Santa Rosa is the seat of Sonoma County and the largest city in California Wine Country, the economic center of a county of roughly 480,000 people. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis put the Santa Rosa metro real GDP near $31 billion in 2023. The local economy runs on wine and hospitality, a deep healthcare base, electronics and advanced manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture, with health care and social assistance the single largest employment sector in the city.

Wine and food anchor the identity. Jackson Family Wines, one of the largest family-owned wine companies in the world, is headquartered in Santa Rosa on Aviation Boulevard, and Korbel, Rodney Strong, St. Francis, and Balletto operate across the surrounding Russian River Valley and Sonoma Valley. Sonoma County winegrowers and winemakers have been reported to contribute roughly $13.4 billion to the local economy, and tourism drew about 10.5 million visitors in 2024 who spent close to $1.5 billion. Winegrape values softened in 2024 to about $626.6 million amid a market glut, which pushes operators toward direct-to-consumer, hospitality, and tighter back-office efficiency.

The other anchors are technology and healthcare. Keysight Technologies, the largest company ever headquartered in Sonoma County, builds electronic test and measurement instruments from its Santa Rosa headquarters with around 1,300 local employees, tracing a North Bay technology lineage back to Hewlett-Packard in 1972. Kaiser Permanente is the largest private employer in the county, alongside Providence Santa Rosa Memorial and Sutter Santa Rosa. Medtronic has long manufactured coronary and structural-heart devices at its Fountaingrove campus, though that site is in an announced phased wind-down. Every one of these operators runs under CCPA and CPRA, with HIPAA and CMIA layered on for the health systems.

Santa Rosa also carries a resilience story: the 2017 Tubbs Fire destroyed more than 3,000 homes and cost the city an estimated $1.2 billion, and neighborhoods like Coffey Park and Fountaingrove have spent years rebuilding. Businesses here are using AI for after-hours customer service, document-heavy back-office work, compliance-grade records, and reservation and patient-access automation to do more without adding headcount. The firms adopting now are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand.
