Syracuse anchors Central New York, the seat of Onondaga County and the center of a metro of roughly 652,000 people. Its economy was built on manufacturing, the birthplace of modern air conditioning through Willis Carrier, but the engine today is knowledge work: health care and social assistance employs about 51,800 people in the metro and educational services about 46,000. University Hill, just east of downtown, packs Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Crouse Health, and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry into a single dense campus-and-hospital district.

Two anchors give Syracuse a signature few cities share. SUNY Upstate Medical University is the only academic medical center in Central New York and the region’s largest employer, with more than 13,000 staff and a research enterprise that spent about $111.5 million in 2024. Syracuse University is a private R1 research university with about 22,589 students and roughly $198.75 million in total R&D spending in FY2024. Together they run the admissions, advising, grant-administration, clinical-intake, scheduling, and records workflows that consume enormous amounts of skilled staff time under FERPA and HIPAA.

Alongside the universities sits one of the country’s deepest radar and electronic-warfare clusters. Lockheed Martin’s Syracuse operation builds active electronically scanned array radars tied to the F-35 and the AN/TPY-2 missile-defense radar; SRC Inc. and its SRCTec arm develop electronic warfare, counter-drone, and sensor systems; and Saab Defense and Security USA builds T-7A aft fuselage sections in East Syracuse. The metro supports an estimated 12,000 to 14,000 defense and aerospace electronics jobs, a large share of them cleared, every one governed by CMMC, DFARS, ITAR, and Controlled Unclassified Information rules.

Now add the semiconductor boom. Micron Technology has begun building a memory-fab complex at the White Pine Commerce Park in the Town of Clay, the largest private investment in New York State history, projected to create about 9,000 direct jobs and nearly 50,000 statewide over its buildout. Syracuse firms deploying AI for grant and clinical document processing, CUI-aware records workflows, patient access, supplier coordination, and 24/7 customer service are pulling ahead of peers still working by hand, and the university talent base makes this one of the higher-leverage upstate metros to deploy production AI.
