Around the base sits a working economy of food processors and manufacturers. Quinte Custom Foods (Tillsonburg Custom Foods) makes meat pies, butter tarts, and frozen products from the former Nestle plant in Trenton, backed by a $35 million, 78-job expansion announced in 2024. Saputo runs dairy processing, Electro Cables manufactures wire and cable in Frankford, and Metro Paper Industries converts tissue at the former Quaker / PepsiCo site. A cluster of aerospace and defence-electronics suppliers, including L3Harris, orbits the air base.

These operations carry a lot of repetitive back-office work: food-safety and traceability paperwork under CFIA rules, supplier and purchase-order coordination, shift and maintenance scheduling on the plant floor, and, for defence and aerospace suppliers, controlled-goods documentation and security paperwork tied to base contracts. The window to adopt is open now. Operating costs in Quinte West are well below the Greater Toronto Area, the Highway 401 corridor puts Toronto about two hours west and Montreal under four hours east, and the $850 million modernization of 8 Wing (including the incoming CC-330 Husky fleet) is pulling fresh supplier demand into the region. Local firms that automate first will absorb that growth without adding headcount.
