Scranton is a coal-and-railroad city that rebuilt itself around services. The anthracite mines, the Lackawanna steelworks, and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad once made it one of the great industrial towns in the country, and the city still wears the nickname those days earned it: the Electric City, after the first commercially successful electric streetcar line, which started running here in 1886. Healthcare and education are the anchors. Geisinger Community Medical Center is an acute-care hospital and the only Level II trauma center in Lackawanna County, and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine keeps its North campus in Scranton. Allied Services runs rehabilitation, skilled nursing, and home health from the city, and Commonwealth Health operates additional acute-care hospitals nearby. On the education side, the University of Scranton (a Jesuit university of roughly 6,000 students that opened the 90,000 square foot Weiss Hall in 2025), Marywood University, Lackawanna College, and Penn State Scranton form one of the densest higher-ed clusters in northeastern Pennsylvania. Close to a quarter of working residents are employed in health, education, and social services.

Logistics is the growth story. Scranton sits where I-81, I-84, and I-380 meet, within one truck shift of roughly 100 million people and about two hours from both New York City and Philadelphia. The region has absorbed close to 44 million square feet of industrial space since 2014, and Lackawanna County offers 26 business and industrial parks across more than 5,200 acres. Kane Is Able, McLane, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Amazon, Chewy, and HarperCollins all run distribution here. Back-office finance and insurance add depth, with Prudential at Scranton Office Park, Cigna at Glenmaura, and Fidelity Bank headquartered downtown, while Gentex, Sandvik, and Gertrude Hawk Chocolates anchor a diversified manufacturing base.

Every one of those sectors runs on repetitive document and coordination work that AI handles well. Hospitals process referrals, prior authorizations, and patient access under HIPAA. Distribution centers field a constant stream of shipment, receipt, and inventory questions against warehouse systems. Universities answer the same admissions and student-services questions thousands of times a term. Finance back offices reconcile, verify, and file under GLBA. Scranton firms that automate the routine now, while keeping a regulator-ready audit trail, pull ahead of peers still doing it by hand, and lower operating costs plus day-drive access to a third of the US population make the city a high-leverage place to put production AI to work.
