Palmdale anchors the Antelope Valley high desert, roughly 60 miles north of downtown Los Angeles and immediately south of Lancaster, with about 164,600 residents and a workforce of roughly 68,000. The economy runs on aerospace and defense manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, transportation and infrastructure, education, and the public sector. Healthcare is the single largest employment category at about 9,400 jobs, but manufacturing follows close behind at roughly 8,000, an unusually large share for a city this size that reflects the concentration of aircraft production at Air Force Plant 42.

Aircraft final assembly defines Palmdale. U.S. Air Force Plant 42, a government-owned, contractor-operated complex of roughly 5,832 acres in Palmdale, is the assembly and flight-test heart of Aerospace Valley. Northrop Grumman occupies about 66 percent of Plant 42 sites and runs B-2 Spirit final assembly, B-21 Raider production, the F-35 center-fuselage integrated assembly line, and Global Hawk and Triton unmanned systems. Lockheed Martin Skunk Works operates at Site 10, the historic home of the U-2, SR-71, and F-117, and Boeing maintains a long-standing presence. Every workflow that touches technical data here runs under ITAR and EAR export controls and, increasingly, CMMC and CUI requirements.

Palmdale is also reinventing itself as a transportation hub. The City is working with the U.S. Air Force and Plant 42 partners to restore scheduled commercial passenger service at Palmdale Regional Airport, which shares the Plant 42 airfield, and the planned California High-Speed Rail multimodal station at the Palmdale Transportation Center would connect Metrolink, buses, and potentially Brightline West via the High Desert Corridor. Palmdale Regional Medical Center, a Universal Health Services hospital that opened in 2010 and provides about 775 jobs, anchors healthcare with the second-largest emergency department in the valley, a primary stroke center, and STEMI cardiac care.

These industries carry heavy administrative and compliance drag. Defense manufacturers and their suppliers manage export-controlled drawings, statements of work, and CMMC evidence. Palmdale Regional Medical Center coordinates patient access across a fast-growing high-desert population. Infrastructure and public-sector teams chase permits, work orders, and grant paperwork. Palmdale firms deploying AI for document automation, patient and customer access, supplier coordination, and back-office workflow are reclaiming the hours that drown their teams, with Spanish-first bilingual capability built in for a city that is roughly 63 percent Hispanic.
