Flint is the birthplace of General Motors and the original "Vehicle City," and that manufacturing DNA still runs through the present-day economy. Education is unusually deep for a city of Flint's size. Kettering University, the engineering school formerly known as the General Motors Institute, builds its programme around mandatory co-operative education with more than 400 employer partners; the University of Michigan-Flint enrolled 6,529 students for fall 2024 on its downtown campus; and Mott Community College trains roughly 6,700 students for the local manufacturing and healthcare workforce. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, headquartered in Flint, gives the city a philanthropic and civic capacity well beyond its population.
