Mobile is the industrial gateway of the Alabama Gulf Coast. The Alabama Port Authority runs the Port of Mobile, the state only deepwater seaport, which moves more than 55 million tons of cargo a year across roughly 18 terminals and handled about 563,537 container TEUs in 2023. The Mobile Harbor channel was deepened to 50 feet in 2025, and the Mobile Container Terminal is in a fourth expansion phase aimed at pushing annual capacity past 1 million TEUs. The Governor office put the port total impact on Alabama at nearly $100 billion.

Manufacturing runs just as deep. The Airbus US Manufacturing Facility at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley assembles A320-family and A220 jets, employs more than 2,000 people, and inaugurated its second A320 final assembly line in October 2025. Austal USA, on Blakeley Island, employs over 3,000 building Navy and Coast Guard ships, including the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship, the Spearhead-class EPF, steel Navajo-class towing and salvage ships, and up to 11 Offshore Patrol Cutters. A 60-mile chemical corridor from McIntosh to Theodore adds Evonik (its largest North American specialty-chemical site), AM/NS Calvert steel, Kimberly-Clark, and Lenzing.

But that industrial volume creates relentless administrative drag. Freight forwarders and 3PLs key bills of lading and customs entries by hand. Aerospace and defense suppliers manage export-controlled documentation under ITAR, DFARS, and CMMC. Infirmary Health and USA Health coordinate patient access across dozens of facilities under HIPAA. Hotels and tour operators field roughly a million Carnival-season visitors a year in the birthplace of American Mardi Gras. Each of those is a workflow AI can carry without adding headcount.

Mobile firms deploying AI for customs and freight document processing, aerospace and defense back-office automation, healthcare patient access, and hospitality customer service are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The combination of a fast-growing port and manufacturing base, the University of South Alabama engineering and computing talent pool, and the Brookley aerospace cluster makes the Gulf Coast one of the highest-leverage mid-sized US metros to deploy production AI.
