Fernie is a small city of 6,320 in the Elk Valley of southeastern British Columbia, and one of the faster-growing municipalities in the BC interior: its population rose 17.1% between 2016 and 2021. It is the only city-class municipality in Canada fully encircled by the Rocky Mountains, and its economy rests on two pillars. Steelmaking-coal mining anchors the regional income base: Elk Valley Resources, a Glencore company, operates the Fording River, Elkview, Greenhills, and Line Creek mines near Sparwood and Elkford to the north, supporting roughly 5,500 jobs region-wide, and many Fernie residents commute to those operations. Coal moves by Canadian Pacific unit train straight through town toward the coast.

Tourism is the second pillar and the dominant in-town employer base. Fernie Alpine Resort, owned by Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, is one of the larger ski areas in Canada with about 2,500 acres of terrain, 142 named runs, five alpine bowls, and roughly 875 cm of average annual snowfall. In the warm seasons Fernie is a renowned mountain-biking destination with eight trail areas, plus fly fishing, hiking, and golf. Healthcare (Interior Health runs Elk Valley Hospital, the valley acute-care facility), construction and trades, forestry, education, and a base of roughly 300 small businesses round out the economy.

These industries carry heavy, repetitive workloads that AI removes well. Coal operations generate constant environmental monitoring, water-quality and selenium reporting, safety documentation, and procurement paperwork. Resorts, lodges, hotels, and adventure-tourism operators field a flood of seasonal enquiries and bookings around the clock, much of it after hours and across time zones. Clinics and the hospital handle high intake and scheduling volumes. Trades and construction firms juggle quoting, scheduling, and compliance records. Automating the routine work lets lean Fernie teams cover far more ground without adding headcount in a tight mountain-town labour market.

Fernie also has reason to diversify and the appetite to do it. The June 2025 announcement that Elk Valley Resources would cut 140 positions on challenging coal-market conditions is a reminder that the mine-dependent income base moves with commodity cycles. The city actively courts relocating technology companies and remote workers drawn by the lifestyle, alongside growth in adventure tourism, food and beverage, and recreation. Operators that build automation and data discipline now are better placed for whichever way the next coal cycle and the visitor economy turn.
