Tennessee runs one of the fastest-growing economies in the South, with real gross state product near $449.4 billion in 2025, up 2.1% on the year, and per-capita output around $61,400. It is not one economy but three grand divisions built around three metros: Nashville in Middle Tennessee anchors healthcare, finance, and music; Memphis in the west anchors global logistics and corporate headquarters; and the Chattanooga–Knoxville–Tri-Cities corridor in the east anchors automotive, insurance, chemicals, and national-lab research. Tennessee had 10 Fortune 500 companies on the 2025 list, headquartered names including FedEx, HCA Healthcare, Dollar General, International Paper, AutoZone, Tractor Supply, Unum Group, Community Health Systems, Delek US Holdings, and Eastman Chemical.

It is a national heavyweight in two sectors that AI touches directly. Nashville is the corporate capital of US for-profit healthcare: the Middle Tennessee healthcare industry generates more than $92 billion in global revenue and over 570,000 jobs, with more than 500 healthcare companies and 17 publicly traded healthcare firms in the region, led by HCA Healthcare, Community Health Systems, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. On the manufacturing side, automotive is the largest sector in the state, with more than 141,000 direct jobs, about 3.27 times the national average, and roughly 561,000 vehicles produced in 2024 across Nissan (Smyrna, about 8,000 employees), General Motors (Spring Hill), Volkswagen (Chattanooga), and the Ford BlueOval City campus in Stanton.

Every Tennessee sector burns staff hours on routine work that AI now handles: patient access, prior authorisation, and clinical-records intake across HCA, CHS, and Vanderbilt; production scheduling, quality intake, and supplier documents across the automotive and advanced-manufacturing base; shipment-document extraction and exception routing across the FedEx-anchored logistics hub in Memphis; KYC, claims intake, and reconciliation across Unum and the finance base; and traceability records across Eastman Chemical and the state's food processors. The firms automating these workflows are pulling ahead of peers still routing everything by hand.

Tennessee is building the talent and infrastructure to support it at national scale. Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Department of Energy's largest science-and-energy lab, will host two new AI supercomputers announced in October 2025, the Lux cluster (AMD and HPE, deploying 2026) and Discovery (2028), and runs the Center for Artificial Intelligence Security Research; Vanderbilt and ORNL partnered in 2024 on dependable-AI methods for national-security use, and the University of Tennessee anchors research statewide. In 2025 the state committed more than 8,000 jobs and roughly $11.4 billion in capital investment, including Korea Zinc's $6.6 billion project, the largest corporate investment in Tennessee history.
