AI automation across Utah.

Utah runs one of the fastest-growing state economies in the United States, with real gross state product near $240.8 billion in 2025, up 2.8% on the year and the highest in its history, and per-capita output around $68,000. The population reached about 3.55 million in 2025, and roughly 371,569 businesses, more than 99% of them small businesses, operate across a young, highly educated workforce. The Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity organises the state around five targeted industries, advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defense, financial services, life sciences and healthcare, and software and information technology, which together employed about 494,900 people and paid $41.4 billion in wages in 2024.

The signature sector is technology. Silicon Slopes, the corridor running along I-15 from Lehi through Draper with clusters in Salt Lake City and Provo, is home to more than 7,500 tech companies employing over 175,000 workers and contributing roughly $25 billion to state GDP. Adobe and Microsoft run major campuses in Lehi, and Utah-born firms like Qualtrics (Provo), Domo (American Fork), Instructure, Pluralsight, and Ancestry anchor the base. It is the highest-paying strategic sector in the state, at an average wage near $133,540.

Utah is also a national aerospace-and-defense centre. Hill Air Force Base, home to the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, employs roughly 26,893 personnel and generated about $12.7 billion in total economic impact in 2024, while Northrop Grumman, the state's largest defense employer with more than 10,000 Utah employees, leads the multi-decade Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile program from sites near Hill. On the resource side, Rio Tinto Kennecott works the Bingham Canyon Mine, one of the world's largest open-pit copper mines, from a South Jordan base.

Every one of these sectors burns staff hours on routine work that AI now handles: SaaS support, onboarding, and analytics operations across Silicon Slopes; defense-supplier documentation and quality records under ITAR and CMMC around Hill Air Force Base; KYC, claims intake, and reconciliation across the Salt Lake City finance base led by Zions Bancorporation, Goldman Sachs, and Wells Fargo; patient access and clinical records across Intermountain Health and University of Utah Health; and device-manufacturing records across the Merit Medical and Myriad Genetics life-sciences cluster. The firms automating these workflows are pulling ahead of peers still routing everything by hand.

On compliance, Utah was the fourth US state to enact a comprehensive privacy law: the Utah Consumer Privacy Act took effect December 31, 2023, is enforced exclusively by the Utah Attorney General, and was expanded by HB 418 to add a right to correct personal data effective July 1, 2026. Utah also passed the Artificial Intelligence Policy Act (SB 149) in 2024, one of the first US state AI-governance statutes.
