Youngstown built the 20th century in steel, and the 1977 "Black Monday" mill closures became the defining story of the Rust Belt. That era is heritage now. The Voltage Valley corridor in nearby Lordstown anchors the advanced-manufacturing and EV story. Ultium Cells, the General Motors and LG Energy Solution battery-cell joint venture, built a $2.3 billion plant there, and Foxconn operates the former GM Lordstown assembly site. The EV market is volatile (Ultium cut more than 1,300 hourly roles in early 2026 on slower EV demand), so manufacturers in the corridor are under real pressure to take cost out of operations without adding headcount. That is precisely where automation earns its keep.

Healthcare is the region largest employer base. Mercy Health, part of Bon Secours Mercy Health, runs St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, the area only Level I Trauma Center, alongside St. Elizabeth Boardman. Youngstown State University educates roughly 11,000 students and runs Ohio first dedicated College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, feeding engineering and additive-manufacturing talent into the local ecosystem. Specialty metals continue too: Vallourec Star makes seamless pipe from recycled scrap and committed up to $48 million to a Youngstown expansion in late 2025.

Youngstown and Mahoning Valley firms that automate document-heavy back offices, quality and maintenance reporting, patient and customer intake, and multi-system production workflows are stretching lean teams further in a market still recovering its industrial base.
