Colorado is the most populous state in the US Mountain West and one of the highest-income. The U.S. Census Bureau put the population at roughly 5.96 million in July 2024, and the state crossed six million for the first time in 2025, with most residents concentrated along the Front Range corridor anchored by the Denver–Aurora–Greeley metro. The Bureau of Economic Analysis reports Colorado's nominal GDP at roughly $557.6 billion in 2024, and per-capita personal income reached $82,705, ninth-highest among the states. About 715,576 small businesses make up 99.5% of all Colorado employers.

It is a deep-tech and aerospace economy. More than 2,000 aerospace companies employ over 55,000 Coloradans directly: Lockheed Martin builds the Orion crewed spacecraft at Littleton, United Launch Alliance flies the Vulcan Centaur from Centennial, and BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (the former Ball Aerospace) builds spacecraft optics in Boulder. Colorado is also the centre of the federally designated Elevate Quantum Tech Hub, with quantum firms Quantinuum, Infleqtion, and Atom Computing scaling alongside CU Boulder, NIST, and NREL.

Every one of these sectors burns thousands of staff hours on routine work that AI now handles: ITAR-controlled documentation and supply-chain workflows in aerospace and defense, patient access and prior-authorisation paperwork across UCHealth, HCA HealthONE, and Children's Hospital Colorado, KYC and account-servicing work across Empower, Schwab, and Western Union, well-site and production paperwork in the DJ Basin, and grade and recall tracking across JBS, Cargill, and Leprino Foods. The firms automating these workflows are pulling ahead of peers still routing everything by hand.

Colorado also has one of the most demanding US compliance landscapes. The Colorado Privacy Act, effective since July 2023, is among the earliest comprehensive US state privacy laws, with a universal-opt-out (Global Privacy Control) mandate, a sunset cure period, and a 2025 biometric amendment. Colorado was also the first state to pass a comprehensive AI law (SB 24-205), since replaced by SB 26-189's transparency-and-disclosure framework for automated decision-making, effective January 2027.
