Peterborough is the hub of the Kawarthas, a single-tier city of about 83,600 in a metro of roughly 128,600 on the Otonabee River, around 125 kilometres northeast of Toronto. Two large school boards, the Kawartha Pine Ridge and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic boards, add thousands more education jobs, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the City of Peterborough make public-sector employment a stabilising force.

The Electric City earned its name as the first town in Canada with electric streetlights, and that hydro-electric heritage drew Canadian General Electric and Quaker Oats over a century ago. The GE era has ended: the plant closed in 2018 and GE Vernova won approval in 2025 to demolish the vacant Park Street complex, while Siemens and a Lufthansa service centre are also winding down. What remains is a leaner specialty-manufacturing base: BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada fabricates CANDU fuel bundles for Ontario Power Generation under Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission licence, Dynacast runs precision die casting, Merit Precision does plastic injection molding, and PepsiCo's Quaker Oats plant remains a downtown food-manufacturing fixture.

Peterborough employers that deploy AI for patient access and scheduling, admissions and records, quality and maintenance documentation, customer service, and back-office workflow are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. With Trent and Fleming graduates in the talent pool, the Innovation Cluster and Cleantech Commons building a technology ecosystem, and tourism on the Trent-Severn Waterway driving seasonal demand, Peterborough is a high-leverage place to ship production AI without surrendering PIPEDA, PHIPA, or FIPPA discipline.
