Lancaster anchors the Antelope Valley high desert, roughly 70 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, with about 167,400 residents and a workforce of roughly 67,000. The economy runs on aerospace and defense, healthcare, clean energy, manufacturing, education, and a niche of publicly traded technology firms. Healthcare is the single largest employment category at nearly 11,000 jobs, anchored by Antelope Valley Medical Center, a 420-bed acute-care hospital and the valley Level II trauma center with about 2,700 staff.

Aerospace and defense define the region high-skill base. Air Force Plant 42, a 5,800-acre government-owned, contractor-operated complex straddling the Palmdale and Lancaster boundary near Edwards Air Force Base, hosts Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider assembly and F-35 center fuselages, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works at Site 10, and Boeing. The B-21 ramp alone has brought more than 1,000 new aerospace jobs to northern Los Angeles County, drawing a workforce that lives across Lancaster and Palmdale. Every workflow that touches technical data here runs under ITAR and EAR export controls and, increasingly, CMMC supplier-cybersecurity requirements.

Lancaster is also a clean-energy pioneer. The city brands itself as the first net-zero and first hydrogen city in the United States: BYD operates its North American electric-bus factory here, billed as the largest in North America and grown from six U.S. employees in 2013 to over 1,000 with roughly 750 unionized Lancaster workers. The surrounding desert hosts some of the largest solar installations in the country, and Element Resources is developing a solar-powered green-hydrogen facility in the city. Simulations Plus, a Lancaster-headquartered biosimulation software company on the NASDAQ, applies AI and machine learning to drug development from the heart of the valley.

These industries carry heavy administrative and compliance drag. Defense suppliers manage export-controlled documentation and CMMC evidence. Antelope Valley Medical Center coordinates patient access across a fast-growing high-desert population. Clean-energy and manufacturing operators chase permits, work orders, and supplier paperwork. Lancaster firms deploying AI for document automation, patient and customer access, supplier coordination, and back-office workflow are reclaiming the hours that drown their teams, with Spanish-first bilingual capability built in for a city that is roughly 45 to 48 percent Hispanic.
