Across the river on Arsenal Island, the Rock Island Arsenal employs more than 6,000 people as the largest government-owned weapons-manufacturing arsenal in the United States.

These operations run on routine, document-heavy, deadline-driven work: quality records and certifications on the shop floor, supplier and purchase-order coordination, export-control and CMMC documentation in the defense supply chain, food-safety and traceability paperwork, patient access and claims at Genesis and UnityPoint, and round-the-clock equipment uptime. That is exactly the work AI automation absorbs, and Davenport-area firms are adopting it to compete with bigger metros without adding headcount or surrendering compliance discipline.

Local advantage is real here. Arconic committed a $175 million expansion plus a $57.5 million high-purity-aluminum project, the Quad Cities Manufacturing Institute launched in 2024 to drive defense and advanced-manufacturing research with the Rock Island Arsenal and Iowa State, and Iowa Manufacturing 4.0 grants are funding smart-factory upgrades. A workforce trained at St. Ambrose University, Palmer College of Chiropractic, and Eastern Iowa Community Colleges gives Davenport the talent base to put production AI to work now.
