AI automation across Wyoming.

Wyoming is the least-populous US state, with roughly 587,000 residents, yet it runs one of the highest output-per-person economies in the country: real GDP was about $40 billion in 2025 with GDP per capita near $67,900, 19th among the states. In 2025 it posted the highest real GDP growth of any state at 2.6%, led by mining, quarrying, and oil-and-gas extraction. Minerals and energy have contributed nearly $95 billion to the economy since 2015, running 21% to 25% of gross state product, and the extraction industry supplies more than three-fifths of state revenues. It is a small economy with a very large industrial core.

Energy and mining define the state. Wyoming has been the top US coal producer since 1986, supplying more than 40% of the nation's coal: Peabody Energy runs North Antelope Rochelle, the most productive US coal mine, and Arch Resources (now Core Natural Resources after its roughly $5 billion merger with CONSOL) runs the second-ranked Black Thunder, together about two-thirds of Powder River Basin output. Southwest of there, Green River sits on the world's largest trona deposit and supplies about 90% of US soda ash, mined by Genesis Alkali (now WE Soda) and Tata Chemicals. Casper anchors oil and gas, while Union Pacific Railroad moves the state's mineral output.

Every Wyoming sector burns staff hours on routine work that AI now handles: well-site, mine, and integrity documentation across the coal, trona, and oil-and-gas operators; patient access and clinical-records intake across Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, Wyoming Medical Center (Banner Health), and Campbell County Health; KYC, custody, and compliance workflows across the Cheyenne digital-asset banks; permit, licensing, and constituent-service work across state government; booking and guest operations across the $4.9 billion tourism economy; and traceability across the state's 10,500 farms and ranches. The firms automating these workflows are pulling ahead of peers still routing everything by hand.

Wyoming has also become the most crypto-friendly, lowest-tax state in America, and that pairs naturally with AI. It has no state income tax, no corporate income tax, and no capital gains tax; it was the first state to recognise DAOs as LLCs and to define digital assets in law, passing more than 30 blockchain laws between 2018 and 2024. Kraken Bank and Custodia Bank hold its first-in-the-nation Special Purpose Depository Institution charters, and in August 2025 the state launched FRNT (formerly WYST), the first US state-issued stablecoin. Meta's $800 million Cheyenne data center and Microsoft's expanding footprint are drawing AI compute to the state, and the University of Wyoming's School of Computing runs an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence backed by a $4 million NSF grant.

On compliance, Wyoming has no comprehensive consumer-privacy statute in force. Its data breach notification statute (amended in 2025 to broaden the definition of personal information) is the primary state data-security obligation, and Senate File 0020, signed in March 2026, adds privacy duties for state and local government entities. Federal sector rules (HIPAA, GLBA, SOX, the FTC Act, TCPA) govern the rest.
