Newark is the largest city in New Jersey and a corporate-headquarters town far out of proportion to its residential size. Port Newark-Elizabeth is the principal container terminal of the Port of New York and New Jersey, the busiest port on the East Coast, which moved 8.7 million TEUs in 2024, and Newark Liberty International Airport is United Airlines largest hub at 48.9 million passengers a year. Audible, the Amazon audiobook company, headquarters in Newark with more than 1,650 employees, joined by IDT Corporation, Panasonic North America, Mars, and Broadridge.

All of that volume creates relentless administrative drag. Insurers and financial firms key claims, policy, and onboarding data from PDFs by hand under GLBA. Port and freight operators reconcile bills of lading, manifests, and customs filings across systems. RWJBarnabas Health, University Hospital, and Newark Beth Israel coordinate patient access across facilities under HIPAA. And every firm operating here now has to honor the New Jersey Data Privacy Act, in force since January 2025, on top of New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance rules for the insurance and banking sector.

Newark firms deploying AI for document processing, claims and underwriting, patient access, freight and customs coordination, and customer service are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The talent base from Rutgers University-Newark, NJIT, and Rutgers Law, the deep insurance and operations workforce, and a downtown filling with new investment from the NJPAC campus redevelopment to the Great Point Studios and Lionsgate production hub make Newark one of the highest-leverage metros in the Northeast to deploy production AI.
