Pickering is a nuclear-energy city on the eastern edge of the Greater Toronto Area. Ontario Power Generation runs the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station here, the city's largest single employer with more than 3,000 workers. The four Pickering B reactors still produce roughly 11 per cent of Ontario's electricity, and in December 2025 the Province approved OPG's $26.8 billion refurbishment of those units, work that extends the station into the mid-2030s and beyond under Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission licensing. That sustains a deep base of engineering, maintenance, and energy-services work across the city.

Logistics and manufacturing are the other engine. Pickering sits on Highway 401 with Highway 407 across its north, and the Seaton Innovation Corridor is filling with prestige employment land: Kubota Canada built its roughly 565,000 square foot Canadian headquarters here, and FGF Brands is raising the Wonderbrands food-manufacturing campus on 151 acres, a robotics-, AI- and machine-learning-driven operation projected to reach 3,000 jobs at full build. Aspect Retail Logistics services 1,200-plus stores from a million-square-foot Pickering distribution centre, and Amazon runs a last-mile delivery station on Squires Beach Road. A distinctive audio-manufacturing cluster, the Lenbrook Group with NAD, PSB Speakers and Bluesound, plus Yorkville Sound, is also headquartered in the city.

Retail, gaming and a fast-growing commuter base round out the picture. Pickering Town Centre anchors downtown with around 180 tenants and is being rebuilt into a 6,000-unit master-planned hub around the GO station. The Pickering Casino Resort at Durham Live brought a large gaming and hospitality workforce from 2021. And with GO Transit's Lakeshore East line running all-day, two-way service to Union Station, a large share of Pickering's affluent, professional residents commute into Toronto, with a 2020 median household income near $118,000.

Pickering firms adopting AI for nuclear and industrial asset reliability, warehouse and distribution coordination, food-manufacturing quality and traceability, casino and retail customer service, clinic patient access, and back-office document work are pulling ahead of competitors still doing it all by hand. The fastest-payback starting points are after-hours customer service, document automation, and the repeatable workflows that burn out lean teams across Durham Region.
