Stockton is the seat of San Joaquin County and the freight gateway of the northern Central Valley. The Port of Stockton, a deepwater inland seaport more than 70 nautical miles from the Pacific, spans roughly 4,200 acres with 15 berths and moved about 6.8 million metric revenue tons of cargo across 252 vessel arrivals in fiscal 2024, valued near $1.76 billion. Three railroads, about 75 miles of on-dock rail, and over 200 trucking companies tie the port to a warehouse economy that has made Stockton one of Northern California distribution hubs.

Agriculture and food processing run just as deep. San Joaquin County recorded roughly $3.22 billion in gross agricultural production in 2023, led by milk, grapes, almonds, cherries, and walnuts. Stockton-headquartered Diamond of California (Diamond Foods) runs a roughly 635,000-square-foot walnut and culinary-nut plant, and the surrounding Delta supports growers, packers, cold storage, and dairies. Every one of these operations works under FSMA, USDA and FDA oversight, and California water and labor rules.

Logistics is the fastest-moving sector. Amazon is the single largest employer in the city, with roughly 6,040 workers across multiple fulfillment and sortation centers and a new facility near 1,000,000 square feet, while transportation and warehousing employs about 13,800 people citywide. Healthcare anchors the rest: St. Joseph’s Medical Center (the region’s largest hospital, with the Cortopassi Tower expansion underway), Kaiser Permanente Stockton, and the county-run San Joaquin General Hospital all operate under HIPAA and California’s Confidentiality of Medical Information Act. The University of the Pacific, California’s oldest chartered university, supplies pharmacists, dentists, engineers, and health-sciences graduates.

Stockton firms deploying AI for port and warehouse documentation, ag and food-processing quality and traceability, fulfillment-center back office, patient access, and bilingual customer service are pulling ahead of operators still running everything by hand. A workforce that is roughly 45% Hispanic or Latino makes English and Spanish service a baseline requirement, and the same automation that handles compliance also closes the bilingual coverage gap. With the Port of Stockton awarded about $110 million to move to zero-emission operations, this is a market modernizing fast.
