Incheon is the gateway to the Seoul Capital Area and, since 2023, South Korea second-largest regional economy ahead of Busan, with a gross regional product around 116 trillion KRW. Roughly 3 million residents live here, and Incheon is the only major Korean city still growing, pulled by the Songdo, Cheongna, and Yeongjong districts of the Incheon Free Economic Zone. Two of the largest engines are world-scale: Incheon International Airport ranked third globally in both international passengers and air cargo in 2024, and the Songdo bio-cluster is the largest biopharmaceutical manufacturing concentration on the planet by capacity.

Songdo anchors the life-sciences story. Samsung Biologics, the world largest contract manufacturer, runs a Songdo campus of roughly 8,200 people that reached about 785,000 litres of bioreactor capacity across five plants in 2025, and Celltrion runs its biosimilar R&D and manufacturing headquarters next door. Around 80 companies and 10 research institutes share the cluster. That density creates relentless documentation and quality-system work: batch records, deviation reports, MFDS K-GMP submissions, and ISO 13485 quality files that consume thousands of specialist hours and must hold up to inspection.

The other half of Incheon is movement. The Port of Incheon is the country second-busiest cargo port, the airport free trade zone anchors a dense forwarding and 3PL ecosystem, and the Namdong, Bupyeong, and Juan industrial complexes house thousands of machinery, automotive, steel, and electronics manufacturers, including GM Korea Bupyeong plant and Hyundai Steel. Namdong alone holds roughly 7,300 firms and 100,000 workers. Customs filing, freight coordination, equipment uptime, and supplier back-office work are exactly the high-volume, rules-driven tasks AI handles well.

Incheon firms deploying AI for GMP documentation, deviation triage, customs and freight coordination, predictive maintenance on production lines, and multilingual customer access are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The talent base, anchored by Incheon National University, the Yonsei International Campus, and the Incheon Global Campus (including Ghent University biotech programmes), makes the city one of the highest-leverage places in Korea to put production AI to work under PIPA and PIPC oversight.
