Taichung is Taiwan's second-largest city and the manufacturing heart of central Taiwan, home to roughly 2.84 million residents. Its signature sector is precision machinery: along a 60 km belt near Mount Dadu sit around 1,500 machine-tool and precision-component makers, tens of thousands of downstream suppliers, and more than 300,000 workers, producing roughly NT$900 billion in annual output. The Taichung City Government describes it as the precision-machinery cluster with the highest output value and density per unit area in the world, anchored by HIWIN, the global leader in linear-motion products.

Taichung is also the global capital of the bicycle industry. Giant, the world's largest bicycle manufacturer, is headquartered in Xitun District, and Merida sits just south in the Changhua corridor. Together with 300 to 400 bicycle enterprises, the Greater Taichung region produces around 70 percent of Taiwan's bicycle output by value. Add Largan Precision, the world's biggest smartphone-lens maker, and AIDC's aerospace campus, and Taichung's economy runs on high-mix, high-precision production where small coordination errors carry real cost.

The newest growth engine is silicon. The Central Taiwan Science Park hosts TSMC Fab 15 and AUO's Gen-8.5 display fab, and in late 2025 TSMC broke ground on a 1.4 nm A14 complex carrying an estimated US$49 billion investment and 8,000 to 10,000 new jobs. That places Taichung directly on Taiwan's advanced-process roadmap and the AI chip cycle, pulling a deep IC and optoelectronics supply chain into the city.

For Taichung manufacturers, the bottleneck is rarely the machining: it is the paperwork and coordination around it. Quotation and RFQ handling, supplier and customs documentation, quality records under IATF 16949 and ISO 9001, multilingual export correspondence, and equipment-uptime monitoring all consume skilled hours that are hard to hire for. Taichung firms deploying AI for these workflows are pulling ahead, and every deployment runs with Taiwan PDPA controls, Taiwan data residency, and full audit logs.
