Reykjavik anchors a capital region of about 249,000 people, roughly two-thirds of Iceland, in a country of 389,444 (Statistics Iceland, 2025). What sets it apart is power: close to 100% of Iceland's electricity is renewable, split between hydro and geothermal. Landsvirkjun, founded in 1965 by the State and the City of Reykjavik, produces around three-quarters of the nation's electricity and more than 14 TWh a year, while Orkuveita Reykjavikur and ON Power supply the capital with electricity, geothermal heat, and water. That cheap, clean power is the input to nearly every other industry in the region.

On top of that energy base sits a fast-growing green data-centre and high-performance-computing industry. atNorth runs two Iceland sites with a combined capacity above 80 MW, and Verne operates a carbon-neutral campus near Reykjavik on geothermal and hydro power. Iceland's distance from mainland Europe adds network latency, which makes the region ideal for batch AI training and HPC workloads rather than low-latency services. Alongside this, fisheries still drive roughly 40% of merchandise export earnings and more than 12% of GDP, led by Reykjavik-based processor Brim hf. at the Grandi harbour, all under MAST food-safety oversight.

The knowledge economy runs just as deep. deCODE genetics, an Amgen subsidiary headquartered in Reykjavik, is a global leader in human genomics; Kerecis turned Icelandic cod skin into the country's first unicorn; and Sidekick Health and Controlant scaled health-tech and supply-chain monitoring out of the capital. CCP Games, now Fenris Creations, has built EVE Online from Reykjavik since 1997. Banking is concentrated in three systemically important banks, Islandsbanki, Landsbankinn, and Arion, supervised by the Central Bank of Iceland, which absorbed the Financial Supervisory Authority in 2020.

Reykjavik firms deploying AI for energy and grid operations, data-centre and HPC workflow orchestration, seafood traceability and export documentation, genomics and clinical data processing, and 24/7 multilingual tourism support are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The talent base, anchored by the University of Iceland and Reykjavik University, plus a small and tightly networked market with limited patience for bureaucracy, makes the capital region one of the most practical places in the EEA to ship production AI quickly.
