Mining and the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector together account for roughly 39% of Western Australia gross state product, which reached A$459 billion in current prices in 2024-25.

Energy sits alongside mining. Woodside Energy, Australia largest independent gas producer, is headquartered at Mia Yellagonga on Mount Street, and Chevron Australia runs its Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG operations from a major Perth office. The same companies are now extending into green hydrogen, green ammonia and near-zero-emission iron, with state-backed projects such as NeoSmelt at Kwinana and the Murchison Green Hydrogen development reshaping what these operations document, monitor and report.

The volume of routine work this economy generates is enormous. METS contractors like Monadelphous coordinate maintenance shutdowns across multiple sites, the grower-owned CBH Group moves more than six million tonnes of grain a year through the Kwinana Grain Terminal, and the Port of Fremantle handled a record 856,529 TEU in FY2024. Remote-operations centres in Perth direct autonomous-truck fleets and fixed-plant telemetry from more than a thousand kilometres away. Every one of those workflows runs on documents, schedules, permits and exception handling that consume skilled hours.

Perth firms deploying AI for mine-safety document control, METS maintenance coordination, energy and LNG compliance reporting, grain and port logistics, and back-office automation are pulling ahead of competitors still running everything by hand. The talent base, the University of Western Australia plus Curtin (ranked fourth in the world for mineral and mining engineering) and the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre, makes Perth one of the strongest places in the southern hemisphere to deploy production AI against heavy-industry problems.
