Naples is the economic capital of southern Italy: around 905,000 residents in the city and roughly 2.95 million across the Metropolitan City, with a city economy near EUR 28.4 billion that makes it Italy’s fourth-largest urban economy after Milan, Rome, and Turin. Services dominate at roughly three-quarters of output, but the metro has a genuinely industrial spine. The Pomigliano d’Arco belt east of the city pairs Leonardo’s aerostructures and helicopter operations with the Stellantis plant that builds the Fiat Panda, while Fincantieri’s Castellammare di Stabia yard and Atitech’s Capodichino maintenance base round out a deep aerospace-automotive-maritime cluster.

Campania is also a national food powerhouse. Gragnano is the birthplace of industrial dried pasta, San Marzano tomatoes grow in the volcanic soils around Naples, and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP production exceeds 55,000 tonnes a year. Processors such as La Doria and pasta houses such as Rummo export globally, and every shipment runs on DOP and IGP provenance, EU food-safety traceability, and tight customs paperwork through the Agenzia delle Dogane. The Port of Naples, managed by the Autorita di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Centrale, moved around 11.8 million ferry passengers and 1.2 million cruise passengers in 2024 on top of its container and general-cargo flows.

All of that volume creates relentless administrative drag. Aerospace and automotive suppliers maintain AS9100 and IATF 16949 documentation by hand; food exporters reconcile DOP certificates, lot traceability, and customs declarations across languages; port and ferry operators field thousands of routine schedule and booking enquiries; and university hospitals, the Campania Bioscience life-sciences cluster, and a large public sector carry constant document and intake workloads. The talent base is real: the University of Naples Federico II, founded in 1224, alongside Vanvitelli, Parthenope, and L’Orientale, plus CIRA and CNR research centres in the DAC aerospace district.

Naples firms deploying AI for aerospace and automotive quality documentation, food-export traceability and customs paperwork, port and ferry customer service, and back-office reconciliation are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. Adopting now matters: the EU AI Act obligations phase in through 2026, and the Garante is one of Europe’s most assertive data-protection authorities, so building compliance in from day one is faster than bolting it on later.
