Arequipa is the mining and industrial capital of southern Peru and the country second-largest regional economy after Lima, with a department GDP near S/31.5 billion. Mining defines it: the Cerro Verde complex, majority owned by Freeport-McMoRan through Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, is one of the world top-five copper producers, generating roughly a billion pounds of copper a year and accounting for about 30% of department GDP and 90% of its exports. Mining and its supplier base move enormous volumes of maintenance, safety, procurement, and reporting work.

Manufacturing runs almost as deep. Arequipa is Peru second industrial city, with output concentrated in three industrial parks: the Parque Industrial de Arequipa with 150-plus companies, the APIMA park for smaller enterprises, and the Rio Seco park. Grupo Gloria, the dairy and food conglomerate that began in Arequipa in 1941, and its cement arm Yura anchor the food and construction-materials base, while Michell and Grupo Inca make the city the global hub of the alpaca-fibre trade, together processing close to 90% of Peru annual fibre.

Agribusiness and tourism round out the economy. The Majes-Siguas irrigation scheme is converting tens of thousands of desert hectares into export farmland for grapes, paprika, garlic, onion, and artichoke, positioning Arequipa as the agro-export hub of the south. The UNESCO-listed historic centre, the White City built in white sillar stone, plus the Colca Canyon circuit, support a large hospitality and tour-operator base. Every one of these sectors runs on documents, scheduling, and customer contact that AI can absorb.

Arequipa firms deploying AI for mining-maintenance and procurement workflows, agro-export documentation, alpaca-export order processing, hospitality customer service, and back-office automation are pulling ahead of peers still doing this work by hand. With UNSA and the Universidad Catolica de Santa Maria supplying engineering and applied-science talent, and the whole macro-south looking to Arequipa as its commercial hub, it is one of the highest-leverage cities in Peru to deploy production AI.
