Gothenburg is Sweden's automotive and manufacturing capital and the country's second-largest city, with about 612,000 residents in the municipality and roughly 1.08 million across the metropolitan area. It is the birthplace and headquarters city of Volvo, founded here in 1927: both Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group (trucks, buses, construction equipment) are still headquartered on the island of Hisingen. SKF, the world's largest bearings manufacturer, was founded in Gothenburg in 1907 and is still based here, and the city sits at the heart of a deep automotive and transport supply chain.

The Port of Gothenburg, the largest port in the Nordic countries, handles nearly 30% of Sweden's foreign trade and about 909,000 TEU of containers a year, with more than 60% of hinterland container volume moving by rail and the Stena maritime group headquartered in the city. Life sciences form a third pillar: AstraZeneca runs one of its strategic global R&D centres at Mölndal with close to 3,000 staff, alongside Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Scandinavia's largest university hospital, and a regional cluster of about 600 life-science companies. Every one of these operations is running AI projects under EU and Swedish data-protection law.

The Gothenburg region is unusually research-intensive. Business R&D expenditure runs at about 5.2% of gross regional product, roughly twice the Swedish national rate, and the region accounts for more than 35% of all private-sector R&D investment in Sweden, more than any other county. Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Gothenburg, and Lindholmen Science Park (home of the national AI Sweden centre) supply a deep engineering and applied-AI talent base, with about 250 companies and 24,000 employees clustered at Lindholmen alone.

Gothenburg firms deploying AI for production quality and traceability, supplier and supply-chain coordination, port and customs documentation, clinical and regulatory-submission workflows, and connected-vehicle data operations are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The combination of heavy industry, a major trade port, world-class engineering talent, and very high English fluency makes Greater Gothenburg one of the highest-leverage industrial metros in Europe to deploy production AI.
