Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, home to around 635,000 residents at the centre of a city region of roughly 1.85 million people. The Glasgow City Region generated £60.15 billion in Gross Value Added in 2023, around a third of Scotland's output, and it is forecast to be the fastest-growing Scottish city by GVA through 2027. Its economy spans Clyde-built engineering, a deep financial back-office and technology base, health and life sciences, and one of the UK's fastest-growing digital and creative clusters.

Engineering is the city's industrial backbone. BAE Systems builds the Royal Navy's Type 26 frigate fleet at the Govan and Scotstoun yards, where a £300 million modernisation delivered the new 170 metre Janet Harvey Hall. Thales Optronics, the Barr and Stroud heritage business founded in 1888, designs submarine periscope optronic masts and infra-red sighting systems. The Weir Group, a FTSE 100 mining-equipment engineer, and Aggreko, the global mobile-power business, are both headquartered in Glasgow.

Financial services run almost as deep on the back-office and technology side. Morgan Stanley employs around 2,400 people in operations and fund services on Waterloo Street, JPMorgan Chase runs a technology hub of around 2,600, and Barclays bases around 5,000 staff at its Buchanan Wharf campus in Tradeston. abrdn, Virgin Money, Lloyds, BNP Paribas, and Tesco Bank add to a cluster of roughly 38,200 financial-services jobs, all operating under FCA and ICO oversight.

Glasgow firms deploying AI for shipyard and defence-supply-chain documentation, banking-operations reconciliation, fund-services processing, patient-access workflows at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and broadcast-asset handling at Pacific Quay are pulling ahead of peers still working by hand. With the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde anchoring UK quantum and photonics research, the talent base makes the city one of the highest-leverage places in the UK to put production AI to work.
