Turin is the automotive capital of Italy and the birthplace of FIAT. Stellantis runs the historic Mirafiori complex, which began producing the FIAT 500 Hybrid in late 2025, alongside Iveco Group (around 36,000 employees worldwide and roughly 10 billion euro in turnover), CNH Industrial, the robotics and automation leader Comau, and the design and engineering houses Italdesign Giugiaro and Pininfarina. A complete tier-1 and tier-2 supplier base sits underneath them, all working to IATF 16949 automotive quality requirements.

Aerospace is the second pillar. The Turin metropolitan area and Piedmont host around 150 aerospace companies employing roughly 18,000 direct workers, about 28 percent of Italy aerospace employment, anchored by Leonardo, Avio Aero (GE Aerospace), Thales Alenia Space, and Collins Aerospace. These programmes run under AS9100 quality standards and EU dual-use export-control rules, so any automation touching engineering data, supplier records, or production traceability has to be auditable by design.

Banking, insurance, and food round out the base. Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy largest bank by assets, traces its lineage to the Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino founded in 1583 and keeps a major Turin headquarters tower; Reale Mutua, Italy largest mutual insurer, was founded here in 1828; and Lavazza has roasted coffee in Turin since 1895. Financial firms operate under Banca d Italia, CONSOB, and IVASS supervision in addition to GDPR.

Turin also has the research base to support production AI: the Politecnico di Torino, the government-backed Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry (AI4I, established in 2024 with a manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive focus), and the OGR Tech innovation hub. The European Commission named Turin European Capital of Innovation for 2024 to 2025. Firms automating supplier onboarding, quality documentation, claims, warranty, and predictive maintenance are pulling ahead of peers still running those flows by hand.
