Bucharest is the capital and the economic engine of Romania, producing around 21% of national GDP with only about 9% of the population. The Bucharest-Ilfov region reached GDP per capita of roughly 188% of the EU average in purchasing power standards in 2024, placing it among the wealthiest regions in the entire European Union. The city concentrates Romania energy, finance, and technology in a way few European capitals match.

Technology is the standout. Bitdefender is headquartered here, UiPath was founded here, and the engineering centres of Oracle, Microsoft, Google, IBM, Endava, and Luxoft all operate in the city. Romania counted around 196,000 IT professionals in 2024, one of the largest IT workforces in Europe, and Bucharest alone generates roughly 63% of the country IT revenue with tech headcount above 70,000.

Energy and finance run just as deep. OMV Petrom, the largest company in Romania, and Hidroelectrica, the largest company by market value on the Bucharest Stock Exchange, are headquartered in the city, and Romgaz runs major operations here. BCR and BRD - Groupe Societe Generale keep their operational headquarters in Bucharest, Banca Transilvania runs a large city footprint, and the National Bank of Romania (BNR) and the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) are both based here.

Bucharest firms deploying AI for KYC and transaction monitoring, regulatory reporting, energy back-office operations, document processing, and multilingual customer service are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The talent base, anchored by Politehnica Bucharest and the University of Bucharest plus a deep finance and engineering workforce, makes Bucharest one of the highest-leverage metros in Central and Eastern Europe to deploy production AI.
