Bilbao is the industrial and financial capital of the Basque Country and the largest city in northern Spain, with roughly one million people in the Greater Bilbao metro along the Nervion estuary. Its economy runs at about 20 percent above the Spanish GDP-per-capita average, built on advanced manufacturing, energy, banking and engineering. Iberdrola, one of the world's largest renewable-energy utilities, has its global headquarters here, and BBVA traces its founding to Banco de Bilbao in 1857.

The manufacturing base is unusually deep for a European city of this size. Around 75 percent of Spain's machine-tool firms cluster in the Basque Country, led by Danobatgroup and represented at Bilbao's biennial BIEMH fair, alongside steel and tube makers like Tubacex and Tubos Reunidos, rolling-stock maker CAF, and aero-engine specialist ITP Aero in Zamudio. Every one of these operations carries quality-system, traceability and documentation overhead that AI is well suited to absorb.

Energy and finance add a second core. Iberdrola coordinates global generation and grid operations from Torre Iberdrola, Petronor runs Spain's largest refinery at Muskiz on the Port of Bilbao, and Kutxabank anchors Basque retail banking from the city. These sectors run under EU rules (Solvency II and CRD for banks, EU environmental and emissions law for energy) plus GDPR and Spain's LOPDGDD, so any automation has to be auditable from day one.

Bilbao firms deploying AI for machine-tool and steel production documentation, predictive maintenance on plant and turbines, KYC and back-office banking workflows, aerospace quality records, and port and logistics coordination are pulling ahead of peers still working by hand. A skilled engineering workforce from UPV/EHU, Mondragon Unibertsitatea and Tecnalia, plus the Bizkaia Science and Technology Park in Zamudio, makes Bilbao one of the strongest European metros to deploy production AI.
