Bandung is the capital of West Java and the fourth-largest city in Indonesia, with roughly 2.5 million people in the city proper and around 9.2 million across Greater Bandung, the basin that takes in Cimahi and the surrounding regencies. The economy of Bandung City reached a Gross Regional Domestic Product of Rp 351.28 trillion in 2023 and grew 5.07 percent that year, while the wider West Java economy grew 4.95 percent across 2024. It is an unusually diversified metro: a historic textile and garment heartland, a cluster of strategic state-owned manufacturers, one of the densest university bases in the country, and a fast-growing digital and creative economy that has earned the city the nickname Paris van Java and a reputation as Indonesia Silicon Valley.

Strategic manufacturing gives Bandung a technical depth most Indonesian cities do not have. PT Dirgantara Indonesia, the state aerospace firm founded in 1976, designs and assembles aircraft from its base on Jalan Pajajaran. PT Pindad builds defense and industrial products in the city, and PT Bio Farma, established in 1890, is the only local vaccine manufacturer in Indonesia and a leading producer in Southeast Asia, exporting to more than 150 countries. Alongside them sits the textile and garment base: West Java is the leading textile-producing province, and most of the country weaving and finishing factories remain centred in the Bandung area, with growth now shifting toward technical textiles such as non-woven fabrics, medical textiles, and hygiene products.

The local advantage is talent. Institut Teknologi Bandung is Indonesia leading technology university, ranked first in the country and strong in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision, with a dedicated AI center. Telkom University, the largest private university in the country with around 30,000 students, sits in the Bandung Technoplex at Buah Batu, and Universitas Padjadjaran rounds out the research base. Bandung universities produced over 8,000 digital and creative-economy graduates in 2023, and the city is a UNESCO Creative City of Design, where a large share of economic activity is design-related across fashion, graphic design, and digital media.

Bandung firms automating garment and supplier documentation, manufacturing quality and compliance records, student and applicant support, and multilingual customer service are pulling ahead of peers still doing the work by hand. With UU PDP now fully in force since its October 2024 transition deadline, including consent rules, data-subject rights, and breach notification, the organisations that build governed, auditable AI today will be the ones ready as enforcement matures and the dedicated data-protection agency stands up.
