Linkoping is the seat of Ostergotland County and Swedens fifth-largest municipality, with around 167,000 inhabitants. Its economy rests on three pillars: aerospace and defence, a deep technology and IT cluster, and the university. The city is nicknamed Flygstaden, the Flight City, because Saab has designed and built aircraft here since 1937, and it is described as a Swedish Silicon Valley because the Linkoping Science Park, founded in 1984, reoriented the local economy toward IT and innovation. The three largest employers are Saab, Region Ostergotland, and Linkoping University.

Aerospace and defence set the tone for the whole labour market. Saab is the largest private employer, running its core aeronautics development and manufacturing in Linkoping, where more than 6,000 of the groups roughly 22,000 people work; the broader aviation cluster employs around 15,000, close to ten per cent of the municipality. The Linkoping site builds the Gripen fighter, contributes to the GlobalEye surveillance system, and produces advanced aircraft structures. That concentration brings a regulatory and quality profile, AS9100 aerospace quality management and EU dual-use export controls, that few other Swedish cities carry.

Around the aerospace core sits a dense technology base. The Linkoping Science Park next to Campus Valla is one of Northern Europes foremost ICT clusters, home to Ericsson, IFS, Sectra, Infor, Combitech, and CGI. Many of these firms were founded on Linkoping University research: Sectra in medical imaging IT and secure communications, IFS in enterprise software, plus Veoneer in automotive vision systems and Toyota Material Handlings innovation centre. Region Ostergotland and Linkoping University Hospital anchor a large healthcare and medical-technology workforce alongside them.

For Linkoping firms, the manual work that drains skilled engineers, clinicians, and administrators is the fastest place to start: aerospace and engineering documentation, medical-imaging and patient-access workflows, automotive quality and testing paperwork, and public-sector citizen service. With Linkoping University hosting Swedens national supercomputer centre and leading the WASP AI program, the local talent and compute base makes the city one of the more capable mid-sized European markets to deploy production AI under EU and Swedish rules.
