Alexandria is the second-largest city in Egypt and the largest on the Mediterranean coast, with a metro-area population of roughly 5.7 million in 2024. It is the country industrial and port counterweight to Cairo: the Port of Alexandria and its sister port El Dekheila together move about 60% of Egypt foreign trade, and the city carries close to 40% of national industrial production. The local economy, estimated in the tens of billions of US dollars, runs on petrochemicals and refining, maritime trade, manufacturing, and tourism rather than the services and startup mix that defines the capital.

Heavy industry defines the skyline. Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals (SIDPEC), Alexandria Mineral Oils Company (AMOC), Alexandria Petroleum Company, and Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals (ANRPC) form an integrated refining-and-petrochemical complex across Amreya, Sidi Kerir, and Wadi Al Kamar, while Abu Qir Fertilizers, on the bay 20 km east of the city, produces around half of Egypt nitrogen fertilizer. The harbour itself, run by the Alexandria Port Authority with container terminals operated by Hutchison Ports and the Alexandria Container and Cargo Handling Company, is one of the busiest in the country.

All of that activity generates relentless documentation and safety load. Refiners and petrochemical plants run permits, inspections, and hazardous-materials records under environmental and process-safety rules. Port, customs, and freight teams reconcile manifests and clear cargo through the Egyptian Customs Authority Nafeza single-window system. Textile, food, and durables manufacturers in the Borg El Arab and Amreya belt chase orders and supplier coordination, and a Mediterranean tourism trade fields multilingual bookings for the Citadel of Qaitbay, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the Corniche. Much of this is still handled by hand, form by form.

Alexandria firms putting AI to work on document and customs processing, equipment and asset monitoring, multilingual customer service, and back-office workflow are pulling ahead of peers still doing it manually. With Egypt Personal Data Protection Law moving into full enforcement, the port and petrochemical sectors expanding, and Alexandria University plus the Bibliotheca Alexandrina supplying engineering and research talent, the timing favours deploying production AI now rather than later.
